new fines if taxpayers refuse to provide the agency with requested information.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3933f20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"3933f20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef2adaa listing elementor-widget class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For taxpayers facing an audit, the new penalties and the extended reassessment period are &#8220;going to sting,&#8221; according to Hemal Balsara, head of Manulife&#8217;s tax, retirement, and estate planning division in Toronto: &#8220;Suddenly, in addition to paying that extra tax, you&#8217;re also facing the penalty if you do end up getting reassessed.&#8221;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-913505f elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"913505f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The CRA would have the authority to publish new notices known as notices of non-compliance under the proposed legislation. When someone disregards the CRA&#8217;s prior notices or requests for information or assistance, a notice will be sent out.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9185582 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"9185582\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5c4bc36 listing elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5c4bc36\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Additionally, the CRA would be permitted to extend the standard reassessment period for each taxpayer who has requested a judicial review of a notice or requirement that the CRA has issued. The length of the review would be covered by the extension. Although this is now usually the case, not all circumstances were covered by the regulations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7dcb96c elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"7dcb96c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6dc7596 listing elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6dc7596\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Two additional penalties are included in the budget proposal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-214a232 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"214a232\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2c4df80 listing elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2c4df80\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The first would apply to anyone who receives a notice of non-compliance and would be $50 for each day the notice is unpaid, up to a maximum of $25,000.<\/p><p>10% of the unpaid taxes would be the second penalty, which would be imposed if the CRA obtained a compliance order against a taxpayer. The penalty\u00a0would only be applicable if the order relates to taxes owing of more than $50,000 in a single year.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b15d0d elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"6b15d0d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" owed, the CRA had the right to issue a non-compliance notice.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e705c26 listing elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e705c26\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>The suggested changes to the budget also permit the CRA to:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>When someone has disregarded a request for foreign-based information or documents ask for a compliance order\u00a0<\/li><li>Request that the necessary information or documents be provided under oath or affirmation<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Once the legislation enacting the amendments receives royal assent, all amendments will take
